Name: Pat Boerschinger

Residence: Weston

Age: 81

Employment: Retired

Family: Two sons

Years of service as a volunteer: 20

Favorite volunteer activities: Twenty years ago, Boerschinger became a docent at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau and received training to lead tours; the following year she began volunteering in the gardens. Ten years ago, she began helping in the kitchen during preview receptions. Now she is a greeter, too.

"It's my second home," Boerschinger said. "I tell everybody I can corner that it's one of the best things I've done for myself. You can choose how you want to be involved, how much time to devote, and can do what works for you. My first thought was that I'd give back to the community, but the Woodson Art Museum has done more for me than I've done for the museum."

Tell about a volunteer experience: Two decades of volunteering as a gardener and a docent has inspired Boerschinger to look at gardening like an artist. "Planting a garden is like doing a painting," she said. "You have a focal point, color, texture and space. We want that color and texture during as many seasons as possible, including the fall during 'Birds in Art' when the whole world comes to see us and we want to put our best foot forward."
