By focusing on simple, down-to-earth health care goals, Appleton-based ThedaCare is getting a handsome payback.

In 2012, efforts by ThedaCare and Bellin Health in Green Bay to reduce unnecessary laboratory tests and develop better care plans for patients to get them better faster and keep them out of hospitals - where care is more expensive - resulted in combined savings of $7 million to the Medicare program, representatives for the health systems said this week.
