This column, hopefully, will put forth a reason for a sovereign nation to have one official language. Although one can continue to speak one's "mother" tongue in their homes or among people who understand it, one must communicate in the official language for general consumption.

Complications arise when parents have different mother tongues. They then have to either raise their children with two languages or choose the language of the country they reside in. The national language is the language spoken by the majority of people within a nation, and the official language is the language ...
