A tag attached to Donna Brown's purse marks her progress in her recovery program with the words "Clean & serene for eighteen months." It's outdated; at the end of May she passed two years of sober time.

Some numbers: It's been 32 months since she was arrested for fifth-offense drunken driving. That came nearly 20 years after her first arrest for drunken driving in the early 1990s. It's almost 40 years since, at age 8, Brown was placed in foster care with a Wausau couple who owned a tavern on the city's west side, and she first began to imagine her adult life as a series of bars.
