When the Green Bay Packers hired Dom Capers as defensive coordinator in 2009, they quickly filled key positions specific to his 3-4 defense by selecting a nose tackle-type lineman (B.J. Raji) and a prototypical outside linebacker (Clay Matthews) in the first round of the NFL draft that spring.

But there's a third scheme-specific position, defensive end, that never made it high among general manager Ted Thompson's priorities. From 2009 through last year, Thompson never used a high draft pick for a scheme-specific defensive end. That ended when he took Datone Jones with the No. 26 pick ...
