The Social Justice Committee of Marian College will be sponsoring a unique free educational event for the Fond du Lac community, on Thursday, Aug. 1 from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Stayer Center. The event is called "Neoliberalism in the Americas: Impacts, Lessons and Responses."

Speakers will emphasize human rights, social justice, and how communities, organizations and countries are responding to the current state of affairs. Speakers include Jill Stiemsma, retired professor of sociology at MPTC; Armando Ibarra, PhD, professor of Chicano and Latino studies at UW-Madison; John Peck, PhD, professor of economics at Madison Area Technical College; and Olive Albanese, a candidate for the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba.

Topics that will be discussed include: economic policies of free trade and globalization, food sovereignty, the historical roots of guest worker programs in the United States, community organizing in El Salvador, the blockade on Cuba and the Cuban health system.

A question and answer period will follow and refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.

The presentation will be given in English, but people from the Latino community or people who use English as their second language are encouraged to come and participate in the discussion. Everyone will benefit from this unique opportunity to learn more about North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.
