Well before upcycling became cool, Midwesterners honed the fine art of finding new ways to use discarded stuff. The Aug. 17 Crafternoon program at the Fond du Lac Public Library will take that idea a step further. Pull-Tab Jewelry, 1 to 3 p.m., will use the lowly soda can pull-tab to make surprisingly pretty accessories. Space is limited, and registration is required beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at www.fdlpl.org, click Calendar, or by calling the Help Desk at 322-3929.

Crafternoon takes place every third Saturday of the month with a different make-and-take project for adults and kids in middle school and older. Supplies provided. It was inspired by a similar program at the New York Public Library that's run by Maura Madden, who wrote, "Crafternoon: A Guide to Getting Artsy and Crafty with Your Friends All Year Long."

Upcoming projects:

Sept. 21: Magnet Board & Magnets. Create a handy message board using an upcycled baking sheet. Sign-up begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 7.

Oct.19: Halloween Jar Lanterns. Spooky-fun candle holders made from glass jars. Sign-up begins Oct. 5.

Nov.16: Holiday Greeting Bunting. Old book pages, a bit of fancy cutting and ribbon make a pretty retro indoor greeting. Sign-up begins Nov. 2.

Dec. 7: Rolled Paper Tree. Make a colorful Christmas tree wall hanging from scraps of paper and odds-and-ends. Sign-up begins Nov. 23. (Note: The December class is held off-schedule due to the Christmas holiday.)
