Packers lose seventh-round receivers to injury on Day 2

Jul. 27, 2013

As Charles Johnson laid face-down on the grass of Ray Nitschke Field on Saturday morning, every thought in the mind of the rookie seventh-round receiver raced around one thing.

Not again.

Only three months into his NFL career, the 24-year-old Johnson suffered his second professional setback during the second day of Green Bay Packersí training camp on Saturday when he injured his knee trying to reach back for an underthrown pass from quarterback Graham Harrell.

Johnson, who lit up the record books at NCAA Division II Grand Valley State prior to his selection, will have an MRI on the knee to assess the significance of the injury.

"I had to stop, try to redirect and go get it. As I was doing that, I had to stop, so I started to fall backwards," Johnson said. "As I was falling backwards I could feel my foot was caught. Iím falling back and Iím trying to get my leg out but it wasnít happening and it fell really awkwardly. It was just one of those little freak things of I scared myself more than anything. I was pretty upset that once again I was injured and couldnít be out there with my team. That was one of the things I was most upset about."

Coincidentally, the same happened to fellow seventh-round selection, Kevin Dorsey, who withdrew from practice a bit later with a lower-body injury after being sidelined throughout the offseason with a foot issue.

Considering the amount of time heís already missed, Johnson realizes heíll be playing catch-up while undrafted rookies like Myles White and Tyrone Walker continue to catch every ball thrown their way.

ďThatís the one thing Ė I missed a lot of on-field time,Ē Johnson said. Thatís why I was really upset about what happened today. I stay on top of my play and stay in the book because thatís the only thing I can do. I canít physically run routes or anything. When I do get the opportunity when I get back, I have to make sure Iím A-plus Ė no missed assignments, none of that. Iím pretty good with that right now. I want to be even better when I come back.Ē
