? A.O. Smith Corp. reported earnings growth in its second quarter of $42.1 million. Ajita Rajendra, its CEO, attributed the growth to "improved economic conditions and the recovery of the new housing market in the U.S.," according to a report. The Milwaukee-based firm sells water heaters and boilers.

? A medical supplies distributor will lay off 70 workers when it closes a plant in Waunakee, the company told the state Department of Workforce Development. Owens & Minor Distribution Inc. is consolidating operations to an Illinois facility.

? Caterpillar Inc. might be forced to lay off workers in Wisconsin as the company reported a 43 percent decline in earnings in the second quarter of the year. The Illinois company's mining equipment division is based in South Milwaukee.

? A call center in the southern Wisconsin city of Brodhead will hire 45 as the Sauk City-based firm Straight Forward expands.
