Central Wisconsin United Way agencies are planning to help about 3,000 local, low-income children through donations of backpacks and back-to-school supplies.

"It's expensive to buy supplies for school, and there continues to be a lot of families struggling financially," said Paula Jero, executive director of the Marshfield Area United Way.

Donations have begun in Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids, with the campaign beginning in Marshfield on Monday. Collection sites are at local businesses that partner with the United Way agencies. ...
