Escaped inmate taunts marshal, is Tased and caught two hours later

Jul. 31, 2013

APPLETON — An escaped inmate who called a U.S. marshal to boast he would never be caught was back in custody two hours later Tuesday a little worse for the wear.

Eric Ottone, 33, walked away from the Winnebago Correctional Center while serving a sentence for burglary arson, said Patrick Amerson, a senior inspector for the U.S. Marshals Service. A warrant was issued for his arrest on July 16, he said.

Ottone called Amerson about 1 p.m. Tuesday to taunt him, but the U.S. Marshals Service and the Appleton Police Department found Ottone just before 3 p.m. at a home in the 800 block of W. Franklin Street.

Police were speaking to residents at a home on W. Franklin Street when they saw Ottone jump out of a second-story window next door. Officers chased him and shot him with a Taser after he resisted arrest, according to the Appleton Police Department.

Ottone injured his leg jumping from the window and was taken to the hospital for treatment, and then to the Outagamie County Jail.

He is being held at the jail on a felony escape warrant and resisting arrest.
