Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke following Friday night's practice at Ray Nitschke Field. Here are some highlights of his news conference:
On Jordy Nelson sitting out:
Jordy banged his knee like two days ago. Worked through it. Heís still being evaluated. Itís a little recurrence of an old injury.
On Brad Jones dropping out:
Brad Jones has finger. Theyíre looking at right now.
On Andrew Quarless sitting out:
No, he has a quad, so he may be a couple days
Thought it was a good practice. I thought the energy was where it needs to be. That was our seventh install of eight. I like where we are schematically. Iím sure to see what the mental errors will come out when we evaluate the film but I thought the offense had three or four segments where they looked like they were supposed to. I think the defense, particularly on the backend, and the overall coverage of our defense Ė the coverage was tighter, competing for balls. Thatís just something as you go through training camp you can see your team coming in sync. I think we definitely took a step towards that.
On two-minute drive to close practice:
Two-minute drive was very clean for the offense. Aaron was very sharp. He was clean on every, single play. He does a phenomenal job with the cadence and had a big play there. The ball to Jermichael, that was very well done.
On Marshall Newhouse working at left tackle with No. 2 offense:
Marshall has played all the different positions for us. Training camp is a time where you obviously have competition, but itís important to make sure weíre rotating with as many different guys as possible and thatís not different for Marshall.
On Andy Mulumba:
Mulumbaís doing good. Iíve liked him since the spring. I thought he jumped out in the spring. Itís been no different since he put the pads on. I think heís an excellent fit for our defense. He plays with excellent leverage with his long leverage. He has a nasty streak to him. I thought Donte Savage has jumped out here the past two days, too. Iím very happy with that outside linebacker group.
On tackling in scrimmage:
Yeah, the scrimmage will be the same format as itís always been. The one year off obviously coming off the CBA was the only time we havenít tackled.
On Boykin, Ross:
Overall understanding whatís asked of them and theyíre performance levels have proved. To add to that their special teams involvement, theyíve definitely created a value for themselves individually and continue to improve and make plays:
On Alex Green fumble, Johnny Jolly force:
Good play for the defense, bad play for the offense. I thought it was a good play by Johnny. Itís unacceptable by Alex. Thatís part of training against one another, so thatís that.
First fumble in team:
I donít know. Thatís your job.
On Jamari Lattimore sitting out:
He practiced. He had the GI (gastrointestinal). Heís going back and forth with the sickness. Heís kind of in and out.
Yup, same illness he was dealing with earlier in the week.
