Every state has something interesting, Janet chided on our drive to sunny Arizona last January. My goal was to skedaddle along the I-roads as quickly as possible through "boring" Iowa and Kansas - get away from Wisconsin Rapids' five inches of snow and five degree cold.

She met the challenge to find diversions in the flat plains states - in Iowa, barn quilts; in Kansas, the Flint Hills and wagon ruts of the Santa Fe Trail. "Life begins at the off-ramps," she kidded.
