Duke Behnke's Q&A: Appleton West track typically open

Q The Appleton West High School track was locked and unable to be used when I wished to do some interval running. Are you aware of any new policies in regard to public use during the summer months?

A When a reader asked about public use of the tracks at Appleton North, East and West high schools in April 2012, I reported that Appleton West had the most open policy of the three.

Mark McQuade, West's activities director, said that hasn't changed.

"One of the three gates is usually open," McQuade said. "We will shut it down once in a while when we have things going on, but for the most part, it's open."

The gate most likely to be open is located near the tennis courts. School officials prefer that people not use the two inside lanes of the track because those lanes get the most use during high school meets and practices.

It's unclear why you were unable to use the track when you arrived. McQuade said you might have gone to the wrong gate, or the track might have been closed because chemicals were sprayed on the infield.

It's also possible that the employee who was assigned to unlock the gate wasn't at work or forgot.

"We're just happy that we have a facility out there that people want to use," McQuade said.
