Hail creates economic storm

Ice chunks spur sales for area businesses

Paul Braun believes the 15-minute hail storm striking the Lakeshore area June 27 has given his business a $1 million sales bonanza.

"It will mean a million dollars in gross inventory through next year," said Braun, president of Braun Building Center on Menasha Avenue. "This storm is definitely going to be bigger than 2006 ... it was centrally located in the heart of Manitowoc."

Braun has bought 350 truckloads of shingles, siding and other roofing supplies with 230 "squares" on each truck, each one representing about 100 square feet of GAF shingles. Trucks head out from his business early in ...
