Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media after Tuesdayís practice. Here are some highlights from his news conference:
♦ I will talk about a number of medical issues. (Left tackle) Bryan Bulaga, just had an opportunity to visit with him. Weíre still waiting on a medical opinion that hasnít come in yet. Heís hoping to give it a go. Understands all the options. Nothing is finalized. Doesnít look like heís injured. Itís one of those plays you donít understand. Weíre still working through process.
♦ (Wide receiver) Jordy Nelson had procedure done on knee on Monday. Heíll be done rest of training camp but hope heís back for start of regular season.
♦ (Defensive end) Datone Jones (out with) illness. (Running back) Alex Green knee. (Tight end) Ryan Taylor had a knee in (Friday night's) scrimmage. (Wide receiver Randall) Cobb had a bruise. (Defensive tackle) Johnny Jolly left practice with cramps.
♦ Worked out (quarterback) Vince Young yesterday. Reasoning is we felt we needed to add more competition to QB room. Itís an ongoing process with our personnel department. He hasnít been with a team in quite some time since Buffalo.
♦ I think itís a real challenge for any quarterback to come into a new system. Last installation day is today. Now we switch to a game play and review format.
♦ I think the rep count as far as what weíve done with (quarterback) Aaron (Rodgers) is where he needs to be at this point in his career. He looks good. Anybody whoís played quarterback for a long time. You have to be aware with footwork so itís a little more extensive than people realize.
♦ Sat down and talked with Bryan to see if he had been given an update. We always do whatís in the best interest of the player. Play 7 in scrimmage.
♦ (Rookie) David (Bahktiari) is going to get a chance to play left tackle right now. Heís a young player, having opportunity to sit in one position solely will help him. Heís shown that particularly in the spring. I have no question about his skill set. He had one mental error in training camp.
♦ Don (Barclay) has been moved around a lot more for we feel is in the best interest of the development of our offensive line. We need to look at not moving him as much.
♦ Vince Young is a very talented player. If you look at his history, it speaks volumes about his ability of playing. Itís just a matter of getting comfortable with him. We have a diverse offensive scheme. Itís important your system can absorb any player. You have to bring in people to fit your system Ė itís not a belief of mine.
♦ Canít give an answer (on whether) Young can play against Arizona.
♦ Itís something to touch on with footwork and release (with Young). The way heíll be coached footwork wise is different than what heís showed in the workouts. You donít spend a majority of your time with that. Just the way quarterbacks are trained on a daily basis is a part of our organization. We have to get down the language.
♦ I think itís more it added more competition to the room. What I said after the game is accurate, I thought (quarterback) Graham (Harrell) played very well. B.J. (Coleman) didnít take a step I was hoping for.
♦ I think the one obvious is Marshall Newhouse has played a lot of left tackle here. We know what he can do. Itís still training camp. Our young players are going to factor in our 53-man roster.
♦ Injury prevention, everyone does everything they can to try to decrease it. As far as where we are today in training camp, the health of our football team is better. To me, that tells me the adjustments are working. These type of injuries theyíre part of the game. I feel terrible for Bryan coming off last yearís injury.
♦ I think Vince definitely has that ability. Thatís something he could help our defense with.
♦ Running game in the scrimmage took a step forward. I thought we ran the ball well.
♦ Green flared up yesterday. You know his history with the knee. Itís something he has to battle.
♦ Ryan Taylor is week-to-week. Itís difficult to evaluate timelines particularly in my conversations with players. I know Ryan will definitely be on the short end.
