Early impressions of Packers-Cardinals game

Aug. 9, 2013

The Packers trail Arizona 14-0 at halftime. Here are some observations on the first half:

*The Packers running game was modest at best. Packers running backs carried 18 times for 47 yards, a 2.6-yard average. James Starks has 12 carries for 38 yards and Johnathan Franklin 5 carries for 11 yards. That’s’ simply not going to cut it.

*Cornerback Davon House got burned twice on long passes. One went for a 38-yard touchdown, and another for a 36-yard gain.

*Graham Harrell committed two turnovers – one an interception and a fumble on a sack. The fumble wasn’t Harrell’s fault – he was hit by John Abraham from the blind side after right tackle Marshall Newhouse whiffed on a block. Newhouse alternated series with Don Barclay.

*M.D. Jennings started at safety opposite Morgan Burnett. His chief competitor for the job, Jerron McMillian, entered the game on the third play in the dime defense and broke up a third-down pass.

*The Packers offense started in the no-huddle and drove 86 yards on 11 plays before getting stopped on downs.

*Replays showed Starks placed the ball over the goal line on fourth and goal from the 2-yard line in the first quarter. The Packers threw a challenge flag, but officials stood by their original call of a 1-yard gain.

*Johnathan Franklin fielded the first punt of the game. He handled it cleanly but only gained 1 yard. Jeremy Ross fielded the first kickoff and returned it 19 yards.
