The school supply drive, United Way of Portage County Volunteer Center's annual Project Fresh Start, is expected to serve about 1,500 children - up from 1,200 in 2012 - on Aug. 17, when school supplies are handed out to those who qualify for them at Ben Franklin Junior High School in Stevens Point and the following week at Almond-Bancroft School in Almond.
The initiative seeks volunteers. More than 250 volunteers are needed this year to help collect supplies, sort and inventory them, and then distribute them to children. Many times and days are available for those looking to get involved. People can go to www.volunteersrock.org/pfs to sign up.
