Permanent storage casks moved on site

Ten 82-ton casks were delivered to Harbor Park in Kewaunee via barge this week to be taken to the Kewaunee Power Station. These will hold the spent nuclear fuel from the recently closed plant on site for an undetermined amount of time. The casks came from Virginia and were transported here from Lake Erie.

Huge cask bunkers for spent nuclear fuel arrived and were unloaded at Kewaunee's Harbor Park this week, the latest evidence of the May 7 closure of the Kewaunee Power Station. The community and region are working together to fend off the impact of the closure in both the short and long terms.

In the short term, county officials and representatives of Dominion Resources Inc., the plant's owner, are concerned about making sure displaced workers are finding new job opportunities.
