These children participated in the annual kids game at the Merrill Firefighters Charities Softball Classic, Aug. 2 through 4 at Ott's Park. Many of the children chased foul balls, served as batboy/girl or just watched the games. On Sunday, the young players divided up on teams, captained by either the 'Firepup' or 'Smokey the Bear.'
The Dugout Bar team pounded its way through the rest of the competition, capturing first place in the 34th annual Merrill Firefighters Charities Softball Classic, held Aug. 2, 3 and 4 at Ott's Park.
The Dugout defeated Past Our Prime 13-5 in the championship game that Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the weekend event. Eleven teams entered the tournament.
"The Dugout Bar has had teams playing in our tournament for many years, it was great to see them get their first championship," said tournament director Jon Leiskau. "That team was nicely balanced with guys and gals who could not only hit, but made some fine plays on defense as well."
Proceeds from the weekend will be divided between the Muscular Dystrophy Association and local charities.
Firefighters in Merrill would like to thank all who donated, participated, supported, worked or helped in any way to help make the 34th tournament successful.
