Mental maturity

I am deeply troubled that a 13-year old - a child - who commits murder can be sent to adult prison for the rest of his life, the thought being that he acted as an adult, so he needs to be punished as an adult.

We have a juvenile court system and other laws restricting children because we recognize they don't have the mental maturity to make good decisions like adults do (should): children younger than 18 cannot sign contracts or consent to having sex; those younger than 16 cannot drive; those younger than 12 should always have adult supervision; and "children" younger than 21 can't drink alcohol because their brains aren't developed enough.

Yet, a child who commits violent murder, miraculously, is suddenly mature like an adult.

Presidential powers

The powers that were given to our first president, have drastically changed since then. Each succeeding president has accumulated more power, some for the betterment of the general public, some for more government control over its citizens. The largest power grab came after 9/11. That president who failed to stop 9/11, also grabbed a vast amount of power. I really believed our current president would stop this trend. I understand it's a whole new world, with the general public having no idea what our government is doing for us or against us.

Maybe it will change with our first women president, in 2016.

Back up a second

I am hoping to start a conversation about the state of the nation, more accurately, the state of its citizens. I believe that the solutions we need as a nation won't be found in Washington nor Madison nor Manitowoc City Hall, but at every residence across this community with each of us as citizens! Most of the nation's problems can be solved here, in Manitowoc County, in the cities, towns, rural areas comprising it.

Starting this conversation let me ask a favor, if you don't have a copy of the Preamble and Constitution get one and throw in the Declaration of Independence while you're at it. It's all online or your representative can send you a copy or send me a self-addressed envelope and I'll send you one. Your homework, read the Preamble; it's our mission statement!

Just me?

Dream destroyed

... and another thing!

I was really saddened to see that last week's storm had knocked down the Maribel Caves Resort building. I always dreamed of restoring that building into a country home. I am also saddened that the storm didn't knock down the "Old Mirro Building" (OMB). Then we would have had to do something with the rubble rather than sitting on our hands and doing nothing!

... this is ridiculous, do something with the "OMB" already!

Swan song

Last week, I talked about the DNR and the fact that they were killing our beautiful swans. Before writing that letter, I called the DNR to complain, and I was told the swans were not native to the area, and therefore, they were being killed. I decided to do some follow-up, and I looked-up swans in a book titled "Birds of North America" written by The American Museum of National History. The very first paragraph I read told me exactly what the DNR should have told me when I first called: "Displacement of native waterfowl species and overgrazing by this species have led to efforts to reduce its number in North America."

Why didn't they just tell me that?

And guess what! We're not native species either unless we have Indian heritage..

al-Qaeda groups

On May 23, in a speech about terrorism at the National Defense University, Obama divided al-Qaeda into "core" and "affiliate" groups. This division isn't pragmatic as al-Qaeda is active in the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Tunisia, Syria, Pakistan and Iran and is united in allegiance to Ayman al Zawahiri. The U.S. commitment to the Middle East has been dissipated by the Obama policies of time-clock withdrawals, embassies abandoned, Benghazi cowardice and terrorism unsecured. Then, Obama's weak stature in the world is made more ridiculous by his foreign policy statements on the Jay Leno Comedy Show on Aug. 6.
