One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for nonprofit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Lunch by the River: Do you have experience with face painting? Are you artistic and would like to try face painting? On Thursday, the Wisconsin Rapids Job Center is sponsoring Lunch by the River and seeks two volunteers to do face painting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. There is no age limit, however youths should be monitored by a parent/guardian.

Safe Routes To School (Wisconsin Rapids Police Department): 18 volunteers are needed to participate in a "Walking School Bus" to Mead Elementary School. Volunteers escort groups of children to school for the 2013-14 school year. Mead Elementary School is the first location selected for this program with hopes of extending it to other schools in the district. There are three routes and two volunteers are needed per route per day. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. (mornings only). Volunteers must agree to a background check, need to be able to walk up to one mile and be available for a one- to two-hour training session.

Girl Scouts Of The Northwestern Great Lakes: Girl Scouting is an exciting way girls can reach their leadership potential. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. We have a variety of ways that adults and girls can participate in our program. Below are just a few ways that adults can make a difference. Travel: Whether it's across town or the world, you have the chance to go and explore and experience a new place. Troop: You will get to explore your interests, skills, goals and dreams in troop programs ranging from six to eight weeks or a year-long troop experience. Events: Come and experience for a half-day or one day Girl Scout events. Camp: Explore nature at a day or overnight camp in the summer and during the school year. Series: Meet with your friends six to eight times and share your passion and knowledge with each other. We are also looking for a few select people to volunteer with our local service team to help design quality programming for girls and adults.
