EDITOR: I recently moved to the village of Spencer and am appalled that pet owners walk their dogs and fail to clean up after them on the sidewalks and all over the village park. Isn't it the pet owner's responsibility to pick up after their own dogs?

I called the village and their only response was that I should call the police. I asked the person at the village hall if the village owned the park. They replied yes. Then shouldn't the village monitor this and take care of it? They replied that they don't have anyone who does this.

I pondered this response awhile then came to this conclusion. I own a vehicle it is my responsibility to repair it. I can't call the police to have them pay. I own two small dogs and I have to pay for the vet costs, the food and their maintenance and clean up after them. I have talked to other residents and they are also sick of this travesty.

Maybe a small sign reminding people to pick up after their dogs, a pole with plastic bags and a trash can would help the situation. I am sure residents of the village of Spencer wouldn't mind donating their extra plastic shopping bags.

Spencer
