School is still a couple of weeks out for students in the D.C. Everest Area School District, but a group of student musicians have ventured back to the band room to rehearse for an end-of-summer jazz concert.
D.C. Everest Junior High School music teacher Joe Finnegan has hosted the Summer Jazz Institute for the past four years to introduce incoming eighth-grade students to a more complex style of jazz than they learned in middle school. The two-week program also allows the junior high students to play with older senior high band members and form mentor-mentee relationships.
