Get more involved in Appleton bike plan

4:32 PM, Aug. 23, 2013  |  Comments

I read with dismay the story regarding the continuation of the Appleton bike lane plan. I urge Mayor Tim Hanna and the Common Council to suspend any further implementation of the plan until it's reviewed and updated.

After studying the official plan, it's clear that a new perspective is needed. Ordinary citizens need to have input into this plan. From what I can determine, this was only done in one public information meeting. I'm certain that the majority of affected residents had no clue that they would be losing their ability to park on their streets.

The issues that I see with the plan are:

1. The original group consisted of no regular citizens. Only those who would benefit from bike lanes were included.

2. The elimination of on-street parking is seldom mentioned.

3. The plan needs to be looked at from a total city perspective, not just that of the biking interests.

4. Several stated goals of the plan are the opinion of a limited group of citizens and may not be the views of the majority of our residents.

5. The bike lanes could have been designated for the warmer months, when most people would use their bikes.

6. Parking could have been allowed in front of churches and schools on a limited basis.

Now is the time for a new group to review the plan and suggest alternatives. For the residents on Mason Street, the damage is already done. It will take an act of Congress to reverse the wrong that was done to these people and institutions.

As a kid growing up in Appleton, I rode my bike all over town with my friends. I think that biking is a great activity. Let's all work together and adopt a plan that we all can support.

Appleton
