The People to People student exchange program for middle school students is under way, with four girls and two boys from Esslingen, Germany, currently staying with their exchange partners from Sheboygan County.

The students arrived Wednesday, Aug. 7, after spending the first three weeks of the program in Esslingen. On Thursday, Aug. 15, they were welcomed by Sheboygan Mayor Mike Vandersteen who grilled brats for them at Deland Park. The day also included a behind-the-scenes tour of Culver's, a visit to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, a walk along Eighth Street, and a tour of Maywood Environmental Park. They also spent a day at Six Flags and visited Chicago for a day trip.

The chaperone for the Esslingen students is Beth Keckonen Hejl, who took part in the Sheboygan/Esslingen high school exchange in 1986 when she was a student at South High. She now lives in Germany with her husband. The chaperone for the Sheboygan students is Judith Slawny.

For more information on both the middle school and high school People to People exchange programs in this area, call Slawny at 920-457-4258.
