Mike McCarthy said the decision to release quarterback Graham Harrell came down to performance and wanting to go in a different direction with the other backup quarterbacks.
"Tough decision to release Graham, more so on a personal level," said McCarthy.
"Graham’s been with us for three years. Very fond of him. He was developing and
he was getting better. At the end of the day we talk about creating
opportunities and performance and we feel at this particular time we’re going in
another direction with the two remaining quarterbacks."
McCarthy said a decision on the No. 2 quarterback hasn't been made, meaning B.J. Coleman is still in the hunt for the job along with Vince Young.
McCarthy gave his assessment of Young.
"Vince Young’s making progress," he said. "I think it’s the obvious. He’s more and more comfortable each week with our terminology and with our offense. Made plays with his feet.
"I think he looked comfortable. Moved the football team
obviously in his first series down on the field for a touchdown. ... He’s getting better."
Other highlights from McCarthy's post-practice presser:
*Adding a third kicker is something we look into all the time. We have worked out Ramirez in the past. We felt we needed to take a closer look. All 3 kickers did well today in practice. Competition is good. No one has grabbed kicking job yet. Crosby had one of better days. I like competition aspect of it.
*Hayward and Burnett will not play this week against Kansas City due to hamstring injuries. Brad Jones (hamstring) still has a chance to play.
*Safety Chris Banjo has been making plays since he got here.
*Micah Hyde having heck of a camp and making more plays than most players.
*Jordy Nelson is ahead of schedule, he looks good. I am hopeful he will play. Same goes for Randall Cobb.
*We are still gathering information on DuJuan Harris knee injury. His status is up in the air.
*I feel very good about Barclay and Newhouse. They've been very efficient, but they've both had plays where they could have been better. We'll see how this week shakes out. Feel like we're in good shape.
*We've always taken high side of caution in bring players back from injuries.
*Masthay has probably had highest performance level in kicking off. It's a real strength of his. You feel good about that as coach to have that in back pocket.
*You don't like to practice player that may not be here for the game. This year is different. We have couple decisions where we don't know.
*From efficiency of our operation and as far as quality of practices, demand of practices and state of team, I would say we are ahead this year compared to last year in training camp.
