Mason Crosby admitted he was a little surprised to learn the Packers added another place-kicker to the roster, but he didnít let the signing of Zach Ramirez rattle him at practice today.
Crosby converted 10 of 11 field goal attempts during a three-man field goal kicking competition that included Giorgio Tavecchio (9 of 11) and Ramirez (10 of 11).
ďItís just more competition,Ē said Crosby of having three kickers on the roster for the first time in his career. ďObviously I donít know the reasoning, itís just more competition, go out there and compete and do our thing. Obviously our personnel department always does their part. Theyíre always evaluating guys all over the place, and this was an opportunity to bring (in) someone.Ē
Crosby made his kicks from 35, 40, 45, 48, 50, 34, 39, 47, 60 and 63 yards. His only miss was wide left from 53 yards.
Ramirez, a rookie from Portland State, made field goals from all of the same distances as Crosby, except his miss was wide right from 45 yards.
Tavecchio was wide right from 45 and wide left from 63, otherwise he made all of the kicks from the same distances as Crosby and Ramirez.
ďFelt good with how I hit the ball,Ē said Crosby. ďEverybody seemed to hit the ball well today.Ē
A swirling wind was mostly at the kickersí backs, which contributed to their 5-of-6 performance from 60 yards and beyond.
Crosby said he isnít frustrated by the presence of a third kicker.
ďNo, I donít get frustrated now,Ē he said. ďI just go out every day, Iím thankful for this opportunity. Obviously I didnít have the numbers, didnít have the year I needed to last year. Iím working it hard every day to try and earn my spot on this team, be a good teammate. Every time I step on field I want my team to have confidence and the guys around to have confidence Iím going to put it through and thatís what Iím trying to show every time I go out there.Ē
When asked if he thinks about the possibility of getting cut, the seven-year veteran kicker replied: ďNo, Iím not thinking about that. Iím worried about my next opportunity to go out and kick. Iím not really trying to think about that aspect of it.Ē
Crosby is trying not to worry about the competition but instead his own performance.
ďRegardless of who they bring in Iím going to look at what I have to do and what I have to take care of,Ē he said. ďI have to go out there and take care of my business in practice and games and go about that. For me itís, regardless of the individual who they bring in as far as who Iím competing against, itís more of a self evaluation. I feel like theyíre probably the same way. Itís just you evaluate what you can do, what you can control, and you go out and try to execute every time you take the field.Ē
