Tramon Williams’ prospects for playing the regular season opener next week looked brighter when he returned to practice for limited work after missing a month because of a bruised knee.

Williams, the Packers’ starting cornerback opposite Sam Shields, injured the knee on the second day of training camp. He took part in all individual group drills in practice and even took a snap or two on the scout-team defense in 11-on-11 periods.

“It felt OK,” Williams said after practice. “Coaches limited my reps, obviously, but it felt good, for the most part, moving around against different guys. I wondered how that would feel. It held up.”

The Packers practiced in helmets and shells Monday, so Williams’ next test will be going in full pads Tuesday. Considering his long absence and limited work this week, it’s highly unlikely the Packers would play him in Thursday night’s preseason finale at Kansas City. But his return to limited work this week increases the odds he can return to full-time work next week and play in the regular season opener against San Francisco.
