A group of children found temporary relief from the hot and humid weather Monday by playing in the fountain on the square in Downtown Stevens Point. Temperatures climbed to 92 Monday and could reach that high again today.

As the evening drew near Monday and temperatures stubbornly simmered in the upper 80s, Lori Kozicki and her three sweaty children wanted to cool off, but the city'smunicipal swimming pool closed earlier this month as college students headed back to school.

So she and children Joey, Jimmy and Elizabeth sought refuge in the only other cool, wet place handy to them: the fountain in downtown's square.

"It's free, it's kind of fun and the kids love it," she said. ...
