Hot and humid weather is expected to continue today, with parts of central and east- central Wisconsin seeing the heat index at between 95 and 100 this afternoon, according to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service in Green Bay.

The NWS advises drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air conditioned room and out of the sun, checking up on relatives and neighbors and taking extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles. This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

The Manitowoc-area forecast for today calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Otherwise, it should be mostly cloudy, with a high near 84 degrees. Light south-southwest winds should become south from 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, mainly before midnight. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch are expected with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Otherwise, it should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 68 degrees. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph after midnight. Patchy fog is possible after 1a.m.
