Letter: Walker, GOP made a mess of jobs corp.

Reforms a Band-Aid on WEDC issues

EDITOR: Regarding Rep. Jeff Stone's recent column "Don't buy WEDC attacks," what I don't buy is Stone's thinking that they've solved all the problems with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp.

Stone talks about reforms such as new software, new board committees, changes in award processing and on and on. But it's really like "putting old wine in new bottles." WEDC still can do just about all of its business in closed sessions. Gov. Scott Walker still has control over 11 out of 13 board members, thus making it a part of his political machine. It is still not possible to examine in any detail the WEDC budget on its own website.

These problems have existed since the inception of WEDC in 2011, yet the legislators gave Walker exactly what he wanted, apparently never anticipating the exact problems that should have been expected such as lack of accountability, secrecy and inefficiency in creating jobs, plus the possibility of a political reward system.

Individuals who are connected to enterprises that have received grant or loans from WEDC have already contributed more than $500,000 to Walker's campaign, which is not a big surprise! Stone paints a rosy picture that doesn't exist in reality.

With a little common sense, WEDC could have been established in a bipartisan fashion that would have prevented all of these problems.
