Aug. 28, 1940 - Hayes elected highway chief: Election of Norbert P. Hayes as county highway commissioner to succeed the late George J. Cormier was announced by the county highway committee this afternoon, after nearly four hours of deliberation. The announcement was made to a special session of the county board, convened to hear the 1940 equalization report of the supervisor of assessments.

Other candidates known to have received consideration are Frank Rioux, assistant to the highway commissioner and a county highway department employee over 20 years; Ray Nadeau, patrol superintendent for the highway department, and Frank L. Chase, De Pere building contractor.

Unanimously adopted by the board was a highway committee resolution expressing regret at the passing of Mr. Cormier, who died last week after he was involved in a serious traffic smashup in the southern part of the county. The resolution was ordered spread upon the minutes and a copy will be sent to his widow.
