One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for non-profit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams Counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Safe Routes To School (Wisconsin Rapids Police Department): 18 volunteers are needed to participate in a "Walking School Bus" to Mead Elementary School. Volunteers escort groups of children to school for the 2013-2014 school year. Mead Elementary School is the first location selected for this program with hopes of extending it to other schools in the district. There are three routes and two volunteers are needed per route per day. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. (mornings only). Volunteers must agree to a background check, need to be able to walk up to one mile and be available for a one- to two-hour training session.

American Red Cross: Volunteer caseworkers needed. Volunteers work within the Disaster Services Department answering phones, providing follow-up casework with disaster clients, dispatching responders on disaster calls and assisting with office tasks. Responsibilities: answer social service phone line; provide case management and follow-up assistance to disaster clients; input case information into the Client Assistance System (CAS); perform exit interviews/surveys with disaster clients; update and expand resource lists (hotels, referrals, etc.); collaborate with staff and volunteers to improve service delivery; compile statistical reports; filing, data entry, copying; and special projects as needed/assigned.

South Wood County Humane Society: If you love animals, we would love to have you come help us at the South Wood County Humane Society. Cat care volunteers clean cages, groom, socialize and help to organize cat rooms. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
