The Hodag Bassmasters once again held our annual Boom Lake Open tournament on August 24 and 25. We had 33 boats this year, which was down a few from the past few years, but still a good turnout. We fished from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The limit was 6 fish per team, smallmouth or largemouth.

Many of the anglers reported a tough bite, at least as far as the Largemouth were concerned. I know I lost what would have been our limit on day one, and watched several more fish spit a lure just feet from the boat on day two. Others anglers I spoke with reported that the smallmouth bite on the river was fairly good.

At the end of the tournament, Craig Zolnik brought the biggest Smallie to the scales, weighing in at 4.95 lbs. Jack Hoeldt bagged the biggest Largemouth of the tournament at 5.16 lbs.

Bob and Jim Kerchefski came in with 29.73 lbs., landing the brothers firmly in third place. The team of Craig Zolnik and Steve Scofield took second place with 32.55 lbs. of fish for their two-day total. First place went to Shaun Kruzitski and Matt Stefan. They brought a total of 34.48 lbs. to the scales over the weekend.

The general public showed up in force to show support for the anglers. There were raffles and food, and it seemed as though everyone had a great time. We love hosting the Boom Lake Open, and we hope to have even more anglers involved next year.
