The flock of birds approached fast and furious on the left side of the Boeing 787 preparing to land at Miami International Airport.

Pilot George Walters didn't flinch as the birds struck the plane, even as the electronic flight display monitoring the engine looked like a slot machine as numbers rapidly changed. The engine quickly recovered.

"We train for the worst case," said Walters, Boeing's lead instructor for its latest aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner. ...
