Spencer Spotlight: Giddy or morose, it's time for school

It's getting stiflingly hot outside, which can mean a number of things.

Weather patterns could be changing, and we are finally getting our summer. Or, by looking at the calendar, I see that Labor Day is just around the bend. That means the fair is in Marshfield.

It also means that an annual phenomenon starts spreading throughout many households. There is laughter and people are seen getting giddy all over town. Some people are downright depressed about it.

The giddy-looking people are actually the parents who will be sending their young ones back to school. Sure, some of them might miss their children, but others can breathe a sigh of relief. There is silence in the house, and as they say, "Silence is Golden."

By process of elimination, the other group is the children.

After sleeping in late many mornings, children now will have to drag themselves out of bed a lot earlier than they really want to. Many will don new clothes and will be sporting new backpacks. Kids, face it, you do like new things!

They will march off to bus stops or get on bikes to ride to school. Others simply will walk. They will tell you they don't want to come back. But, deep down there is part of them is looking forward to it. They will come in the front doors, and it will seem like they never left in the spring.

The school building is ready for you. Teachers have been busily getting their rooms ready to welcome you back. The custodial staff has done a wonderful job of sprucing the place up. The floor is shiny, and some of the walls have experienced a facelift with new paint. Other projects also have been done that will be a plus for you.

As with every year, I need to remind motorists to please be careful when coming through town. The little eager beavers will not be paying real close attention as they go to school. They won't be looking for you. You need to watch out for them. Remember to keep an eye on the speed limit in school zones.

As another summer vacation closes its door, another door opens to new beginnings for our children. Make the best of your school year.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, and don't eat too many creampuffs or elephant ears at the fair.
