I can't believe or understand why the city's Traffic Board wants to remove the stop lights on West Ninth Avenue at Westhaven Drive.
Lights were installed at West Ninth Avenue/Westhaven Drive when the roundabouts were going in on Witzel Avenue. When it was decided to remove them, I and several others had obtained nearly 2,000 petition signers to return the lights to normal operating condition. This was nearly three years ago.
When only stop signs were on Westhaven Drive it was very difficult and dangerous when trying to cross Ninth from Westhaven or turning left onto Westhaven from Ninth.
Pedestrians had a very difficult time getting across Ninth because of the traffic and Ninth being a four lane street.
Residents along Ninth also had a very difficult time exiting their driveways because of the heavy traffic.
The busiest hours are early morning, noon and 3 pm to 8 pm. Cars are speeding on Ninth Avenue and without stop and go lights the speeding will only get worse.
St. Raphael Church has a very large congregation whose members exit onto Westhaven after church. It also affects the other churches on Ninth Avenue because there is no break in traffic.
The funeral home on Westhaven adds to the cars entering Ninth. Mercy Medical adds to the traffic.
A comment at the Traffic Board meeting was that there are a lot of accidents at that intersection. Can you imagine what the accident rate would be without the lights?
Speeding is a problem on Ninth Avenue and traffic light are the only deterrent to keeping the speed down. Another comment at the Traffic Board was the cost of the lights. The LED lights are very low cost to operate.
