Patrons can 'pay it forward' at Churn

Pay it Forward. Merrill residents are invited to help feed the hungry in our community by supporting St. Vincent De Paul Outreach Program with donated meals of soup and bread.

Spurred by a suggestion from a charitably minded customer, the Checkered Churn established "Daily Bread - in kind," an opportunity to work as a team with cafe patrons and St. Vincent de Paul Outreach to provide nourishing meals to local citizens in need.

"In kind" refers to charitable donations given in goods or services.

The process is simple: A patron purchases a "Daily Bread-In Kind" postcard, and the Checkered Churn entrusts the donation to the St.Vincent de Paul Outreach Program. SVDP, in turn, presents this donation to a deserving person to redeem for a meal of soup and bread at The Checkered Churn.

This opportunity has been well-received by customers and staff members at the restaurant and by St. Vincent de Paul.

The Checkered Churn at 914 E. Main St., Merrill, offers a limited, ever-changing menu that includes soups, crustless quiche and sandwiches, along with baked items, coffee and other beverages. It's open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

Staff members hope other restaurants and their patrons will join the cause to feed the hungry. For more information, contact Kitty or Stephanie at The Checkered Churn, 715-539-8911.
