It's been an annual tradition for nine years. But for the second year in a row, my friend and I nearly missed our chance to camp on Rock Island.

We began camping when our kids were so little, we often had to carry them from the ferry landing to the campsite, a million miles away. Now, those kids are teenagers and tweens.

Because each trip is unique, my friend and I have vivid memories of each one. Also, we've kept detailed camping journals, complete with sketches. ...
