Phases one and two of the Baileys Harbor community mural are now complete.
Well, Phases one and two of the Baileys Harbor Community Mural Project are now complete!
For the past two summers, artist Ram Rojas has been creating a huge mural on the side of Nelson's Shopping Center next to the Baileys Harbor Marina. The final UV top coat was applied last week. Rojas worked long hours to complete the flora and fauna and lines of poetry to the mural.
The result of all this hard work is a beautiful art mural that highlights the past, present, the future and the natural beauty of our town. Verses of Lorine Niedecker's poem "Wintergreen Ridge" can be seen throughout the 96-foot-long mural, hidden in the trees, rocks and sky.
There is so much included in the mural that it takes a few visits to appreciate all the detail that is involved in this work of art. Look for the poetry verses and also see how features of the building, such as the electric wires to the store and windows, were either camouflaged or incorporated into the mural. Stop by and see this great addition to our town.
The mural is complete but still needs to be paid for. The project was funded in part by a Woodrow Hall Jumpstart award. An anonymous donor allowed the $25,000 project to begin in 2012. Donations to date cover $16,000 of that initial amount. The Baileys Harbor Historical Society is receiving contributions for this project at P.O. Box 336, Baileys Harbor, WI, 54202.
The Ridges Sanctuary will hold its sixth annual golf event, A Round for The Ridges, on Sept. 28. The nine-hole scramble tees off with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. at Maxwelton Braes Golf Course in Baileys Harbor.
A lunch will be served to all participants at Max's restaurant next to the golf course. The cost of the fundraising event is $75 per golfer, which includes the round of golf, cart and the lunch.
Folks can form their own teams or call The Ridges to join a team. Please call Kate at (920) 839-2802 for more information or to register your team. The golf event will coincide with the Baileys Harbor annual Autumnfest and Car Show. You can enjoy golf in the morning and the festival in the afternoon.
The Zion Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing will take place begining at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Zion Methodist Church beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Rev. Don Heeringa will serve as song leader.
Don't forget to stop by the Baileys Harbor Farmers Market. The market is held from 9 a.m. to noon each Sunday on the lawn of the Town Hall. Tasty crops of all kinds are ready for your purchase along with some great crafts.
It's really hard to believe that today is Aug. 31. As far as the kids are concerned, this is the last day of summer. Have a great Labor Day weekend!
Happy birthday wishes to Bob Janda (Sept. 2) and to Bill Angstadt (Sept. 6). See you next time on this side of the Door.
