An ancient Jewish legend describes a legislative session in which the rabbis argue about a specific application of the sacred law. One participant sharply disagrees with the decision of his colleagues.

He proclaims: "If I am right and the majority wrong, may the river running down the side of the hill reverse its course." It does so; the river flows uphill. "I'm sorry," the chairman responds, "we are taught that the will of the majority must prevail."
