Participants run in the 2012 Horicon Bank 5K Run/Walk for Wellness at the UW-FdL campus. The second annual run/walk to be held Sept. 14 will benefit NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Fond du Lac. Visit www.horiconbank5k.com or call 921-3070 to register.
Horicon Bank and NAMI Fond du Lac are teaming up for a second round of wellness.
Last year, Horicon Bank sponsored its first 5K Run/Walk for Wellness to benefit NAMI Fond du Lac. NAMI, or the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a nationwide grassroots movement working at the local, state and national levels to provide education, support and advocacy for families and individuals affected by mental illness.
The proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk for Wellness support the local Fond du Lac chapter of NAMI, Friendship Corner and the NAMI Drop-In Center.
"NAMI has a great, local mission," said Horicon Bank branch manager Dale Hans. "I'm looking forward to partnering with them for a second year to support overall health and specifically, mental wellness."
In its first year, Horicon Bank's 5K Run/Walk for Wellness had more than 180 participants and raised over $3,300 for NAMI. This year, Hans says they're hoping to break that record at the Sept. 14 event.
"We'd really like to see our race roster explode with new participants this year. So many people and their families in our community are affected by mental illness and we hope they all come out to support our cause," said Hans.
But the number of runners isn't the only thing that is changing this year.
"This year we're introducing chip-timing," said Hans. "It's a more accurate timing system that will give participants their results much faster. We're also going to have Matt's DJ Services on site to make the event a little more fun. And of course, we're bringing back all the favorites - kids' games and face painting and the $100 prizes for the top runners."
The annual Run/Walk will again be hosted on the UW-FDL campus outside the Mary Kelly Gymnasium. This year's partner sponsors with Horicon Bank include Agnesian Health Care and the East Fond du Lac County chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
