True, college is expensive. But I recently crunched my numbers, and estimate that my public university bachelor's degree will fetch me more than $10,000 per year more than my pre-college income. In five years that difference will meet my debt. Sure, it'll take 10 years to pay off the debt, but the work I hope to be doing will be true to my self, skills and passions. But it's been a tough seven years. Thank God for the support of my family and friends, professors and advisers - and government.

If we don't deal with costs and college debt as a nation, we will fail to compete with the rest of the world. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren supports a plan that allows students to borrow money for education at the same rate banks got for the bailout! Education will allow us to fill all those job openings that go unfilled because we don't have qualified workers.

I'd say pass these proposals! It is hard to get out of dead-end jobs without a degree. Here there are two left at home to go to college, then I need to finish my own degree.

Part of the problem is steadily declining state support for higher education and it's something that is happening across the country.

When something is subsidized so that users don't pay the full cost, that cost tends to go up. The federal government has been subsidizing college education for a few decades now and, no surprise, its cost has escalated. The subsidies have been a nice reward for higher education's loyalty to left-leaning political causes, but it has come at a cost.

Big Education tends to debase some career choices in an effort to sell four-year degrees. We need a culture that views and holds all career choices and jobs as meaningful. The answer is more competition in the education system. Not everyone needs to go to college. Cut some but not all subsidies and Big Education will learn to offer a more cost-effective product. Make it acceptable again to be a plumber.
