Green Bay Packers cornerback Micah Hyde, making a tackle during a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks last month, has "a great opportunity" in Sunday's season opener, coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday. File/Press-Gazette Media
Here are highlights from Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy’s post-practice press conference on Wednesday:
♦ Injury report: Cornerback Jarrett Bush (ankle) limited. Cornerback Casey Hayward (hamstring) out.
♦ Very confident in my run blocking, very confident in my football team. Spent Monday and today in helmets, will put pads on tomorrow. Very confident in all aspects of fundamentals.
♦ Our goal is to score as many points as we need to.
♦ I’m looking to make a jump in the win column (when asked about making a jump in the running game). However that shakes out, we’re going to go after opponent like we always do.
♦ Only thing as far as getting team ready, on offense, we have 27 defensive players and 23 offensive players, we’re going about it on offense the way we always have. Excellent group of receivers, plus Jermichael Finley.
♦ Daily emphasis of ours as football team is taking care of the football.
♦ Turnovers are factor in every game. When you’re on short side of it it’s harder to win game.
♦ 49ers game is very important because it’s the next game. It’s a new season.
♦ Playoff loss to 49ers is one game we are looking at, will have input on game plan.
♦ I don’t have timeline for Hayward. He will not be available this week.
♦ (Rookie cornerback) Micah Hyde is one of top producers in training camp. This is a great opportunity for him.
♦ Trusted the medical (staff) on (safety) Morgan Burnett and (linebacker) Brad Jones and their hamstrings. They are full participation today. They practiced well, looked good. (Not listed on injury report).
♦ Will be new looks, unscouted looks will be about 20 to 30 percent in this game, if history repeats.
♦ Urgency: it’s a whole different environment when first week comes around. Quality of practice goes up. How you start season, history will tell you, is important. Feel very good about urgency and preparation phase has started.
♦ This is pro football. The (Texas) A&M trip (during the offseason) was about a number of different things. Biggest positive was being able to talk football as a staff on that trip.
♦ It’s a different year. I look where our defense is at based on how it’s come out of training camp. Of our three groups, defense has come out best from training camp. I am leaning on defense, particularly defensive line.
