There’s a theme that Packers players are carrying around with them this season, and it’s called “Team 93.” It means this is the 93rd team in the history of the Packers’ storied franchise. But more important, it means the team is putting the past in the rear-view mirror and focusing on the present.
“It started in training camp,” said safety Morgan Burnett about the “Team 93” motto. “Like our first team meeting together, with coach McCarthy, he brought it to all of our attention about Team 93. We’re the 93rd team in Green Bay Packers history and he always preaches to us every year that each team has their own identity. You can’t live off last year. You can’t live off the past so we got to find a way to build our identity. It takes a team effort to do that.”
The Packers are leaning especially heavy on that theme this week as they prepare for the San Francisco 49ers, who knocked them out of the playoff last January. When that topic comes up, players immediately go into “Team 93” mode.
“To be honest, last January, that’s over,” said Burnett “That was a different team, this is a new team. You’re excited about week 1, it’s a new year. This is the most important game to us, our only game. This is a way to try and build our identity for Team 93. That’s our main focus right now.”
