Come ride with us!
In less than two weeks, Mid-State Technical College will kick off a series of five centennial celebrations across the college district with a Centennial Bike Ride & Walk.
The Sept. 14 noncompetitive event includes 10K, 50K and 100K bicycle routes and a 10K walking route. I have taken the plunge and signed up for the 100 kilometer (65 mile) bike ride. I've never done anything like this before, but I never will if I never try.
Individual aspirations and goals are sometimes diverted by fear or barriers along the way. MSTC aims to minimize barriers so you can focus on your education. We provide you with the hands-on skills you need to be successful in our local workforce. This foundation is further enhanced through practice and lifelong learning.
An important part of the Centennial Bike Ride & Walk is that all proceeds benefit MSTC student scholarships. Many dedicated MSTC students encounter life's challenges or unforeseen obstacles and simply need a little boost to get them on their way.
I recall the story of one student, a single mother of three, who was doing great in her classes but struggling financially to make ends meet. Leaving her residence one morning, she encountered a flat tire. She had no money to fix it, so she couldn't get to her classes. However, that same day, she received notice in the mail that she had been awarded an MSTC scholarship. This scholarship offset a portion of her tuition, giving her the financial flexibility she needed to fix the tire, get to her classes and ultimately finish her degree.
We all have challenges to overcome in life. Facing a challenge takes courage and dedication, but the destination is well worth the trip.
