A Facebook picture revealed the expression on my son's face as he ate his first dried cricket. First? Did he eat more than one I wondered? My response was, "Didn't your mama teach you not to eat bugs?" He said I always encouraged him to try new things, "It's a lesson I only recently learned."

Memories of presenting a plate of ham and mashed potatoes, squash and roasted chicken, or potato salad and fish flashed before me. Little arms folded over his chest, a scowl would darkened his face, "I don't yike it." He'd never tasted the food in front of him, but made a judgment as rock-solid as Grandma's ...
