Aug. 27

Volleyball: UW-Oshkosh Khaos at Kolf Klassic

The Algoma Wolves volleyball team were champions of the bronze bracket at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Khaos at Kolf Klassic.

"We played some big schools that proved to be great competition for us," said Cindy Koss, head volleyball coach. "This tournament was a learning experience for the team as we have many players with no varsity experience and some coming right from the freshman level."

Koss said that the team started off slow, but came back to play better the second day of the tournament, Koss said

"I was very happy with the progress made but we still have much to work on," Koss said. "It will be a continuous process this season."

Game Results

Algoma vs. Ripon: 14-25, 19-25, Ripon took third in silver bracket.

Algoma vs. Pulaski: 25-27, 14-25, Pulaski took first in the silver bracket.

Algoma vs. Grafton: 18-25, 19-25, Grafton took third in gold bracket.

Aug. 28

Algoma vs. Wausau East: 14-25, 14-25, Wausau East took first in gold bracket.

Algoma vs. Johnson Creek: 25-20, 25-20

Algoma vs. Princeton/Green Lake: 25-22, 25-23

Semifinals vs. Weyauwega-Fremont: 25-19, 25-16

Championship vs. Port Washington: 25-17, 25-23

Algoma's standout players were senior Kennedy Blahnik with 27 kills, 62 assists and 16 blocks. Junior Karissa Koss had 22 kills, 24 digs, eight blocks and seven service aces. Sophomore Anna Dier contributed to the weekend with 26 kills and 15 blocks and senior Shante Williams had 13 kills, 16 digs and five blocks. Senior Leah Blazkovec had 10 blocks and six kills; sophomore Carmen Haack had 39 assists and sophomore Baleigh Delorit had nine kills, 12 digs and four blocks.

Aug. 29

Cross-Country: Chief Kahquados Invitational in Gibraltar

Boys: The Wolves took 12th of 16 teams with a score of 285 overall. Freshman Jacob Wahlers placed eighth individually with a time of 17:42.63.

Girls: The Algoma girls team placed 10th of 14 teams, scoring 223 as a team, and junior Whitney Ebert took fourth place individually with a time of 15:20.69.

Soccer: Algoma 1, Manitowoc Roncalli 1, game terminated by referee in second half. See news coverage on Page 3A.

Volleyball: Algoma 3, Mishicot 1

Game one was won by Algoma, 25-19. Game two Mishicot overcame the Wolves, 25-22. Algoma came back and won the next two games 25-23 and 25-17.

Senior Kennedy Blahnik had 15 kills, 21 assists and four blocks for the match while junior Karissa Koss showed Mishicot 14 digs, seven kills and five saves. Sophomores Anna Dier and Carmen Haack had 11 kills and four blocks and 20 assists, respectively. Senior Leah Blaxkovec had four blocks, three kills and senior Shante Williams had eight digs.

"We looked good in the first set, but soon lost power in our legs and movement slowed way down due to the eight matches played on Tuesday and Wednesday," Koss said. "The girls pulled together and gave what they could to get the victory."
