Throughout the week, we post questions on Facebook to foster conversation and get readers' reactions to stories. These are some excerpts from a recent conversation.

We asked: Marathon County has taken the first step in buying iPads for the County Board. Do you think iPads are a good investment?

For what purpose? I don't see how iPads will help them be more efficient or productive. They are more like a distraction - darn you Candy Crush!

- Judy Lillie

Buy them some nice notepads and pens.

- David Lampley

Do they not make enough money to buy their own "tools" for work?

- Ken Runkel

More stupid spending! What's wrong with some paper and a pen? The money they will spend on these, I am sure there is something better they can spend it on.

- Tracey Smith-Bauer

My first thought would be that it is more of a luxury than a necessity.

- Katie Ekstrom

Purchase Chromebooks instead. It's much more useful than a tablet for a fraction of the cost. Government needs to be fiscally responsible.

- Greg Eschmann

To those who keep saying "paper and pens": Do you really think the iPads are being purchased to simply record meeting minutes?

- Matthew Daniel

With documents being electronic, these tools make it easier to share information with the public and easier for companies to do business with the agencies that have everything online.

- William Meyer

They should be given iPads if needed for business only, but I can't imagine being given an iPad and using it for just business. With the economy as it is, these type of luxuries should be dismissed until things get better. County people are losing their jobs and the big shots are getting iPads. I don't understand.

- Sharon Sefton

I prefer the chalkboard.

- Mandy Sorenson Bernarde
